New location of Oxford YMCA to change hours of some services

The head of Calhoun County’s YMCA on Friday said the nonprofit group’s location in Oxford will move, changing its hours and some of the services it offers starting March 1.

Spotlight on: Johnnie Pearson, outstanding volunteer

Johnnie Pearson is the head swim coach at the YMCA of Calhoun County and has volunteered 22 hours a week for the past five years in that capacity. He was recently named the recipient of the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama’s Juliette P. Doster Award for Outstanding Volunteerism in Community Health.

Demetrius Hardy is the director of sports and aquatics at the YMCA of Calhoun County. He has always had a passion for sports — basketball, in particular. “I have played basketball since I was 8, and I have coached since 2009 or 2010,” he said. He has also coached baseball and football, and recently became certified as a lifeguard.
